Rex Black Diamond Hot Wax

LOW FRICTION, BEST DIRT REPELLENCE, AND EASY MAINTENANCE

Hot waxing is an increasingly popular method to lubricate chains. Solid wax doesn't attract dirt, keeps the bike's drivetrain clean, and repels grime better than traditional chain oils.

BLACK DIAMOND HOT WAX combines the market's most effective lubrication technology with Black Diamond additives and Rex's over 70 years of experience in waxes. Hot waxing facilitates bike maintenance, saves chains and gears from wear. A hot-waxed chain won't mess up or stain and can be cleaned with just hot water.

How to switch to hot wax:

  1. Before the first use, thoroughly clean the chain with a solvent cleanser like Rex Chain Cleaner. A good cleaning enhances wax adhesion and lubrication longevity. If the chain has been hot-waxed before, a rinse with hot water and wiping will suffice. Factory grease on new chains must be removed before waxing.
  2. Melt all wax blocks on low heat (max. 100°C) in a pot along with the chain. Allow the chain to heat up and mix it well with the wax to ensure the wax penetrates the chain completely. Multiple chains can be treated simultaneously.
  3. Remove the chain to cool. The treatment is successful if the chain is stiff. Loosen the chain links and install it. The chain will further loosen after a few kilometers of riding.
  4. Re-wax the chain when it becomes noisy. To keep the wax clean for longer, rinse the chain first with hot water, wipe it, and let it dry thoroughly. Then repeat the waxing process.

Two-Step Waxing Option – Tailor the Blend to Your Needs

We have integrated the Black Diamond chain oil additives, proven in testing, into Rex's wax base. For quality assurance, all Black Diamond additives are combined into a single black block, handcrafted in our development lab in Hartola. This additive block is like a bottle of Black Diamond chain oil in solid form!

The eleven white Rex paraffin blocks contain a carefully selected wax mixture which, combined with the additive block, provides the best market lubrication. By melting all blocks (11+1) together, you achieve a wax blend that performs excellently in all conditions.

Melting the additive block with four light wax blocks (4+1) results in a highly durable mixture suitable for long rides and competitions. The remaining seven wax blocks can be used as a cleaning pre-wax to help keep the 4+1 mix clean and performing longer. This two-step waxing treatment offers everything you need in one package!

Troubleshooting:

Lubrication doesn't last long enough

  • Residual oil or factory grease on the chain prevents wax adhesion. Clean and re-wax.
  • Chain oil or factory grease mixed into the wax degrades its properties. Replace with new wax.
  • The chain's coating prevents proper wax adhesion (applies to certain KMC chains).
  • The chain is worn. A very loose and worn chain is noisier quicker.
  • After breaking in, a waxed chain is generally louder than one oiled with wet oil. A higher noise level is normal, even though the lubrication is effective.

Chains Rust

  • Susceptibility to surface rust is characteristic of all hot waxes. Dry the chains after riding in the wet or after washing.

Gears Don't Work Properly

  • After waxing, go through all the gears on the bike from one extreme to the other to loosen the chain laterally. After this, the gears will work as they should.
